- programme note -
"I spent the summer of 2014 in Japan, where I married my wife in a small Shinto ceremony at a shrine in rural Tokushima. This piece is a preliminary attempt to explore the new significance Japan and its music has for me.

Sawari is a term generally used to describe an aspect of the timbre of instruments like the shamisen or the biwa, where an intentional 'noise' component is imbued in the sound from the buzzing of the string(s). This piece is an exploration into how the concept of 'sawari' might be applied to the Western guitar, but is also specifically a preliminary look at the shamisen; in particular, I was especially inspired by Yoshida-kyodai (the 'Yoshida Brothers') and all the incredible work that they have done (and continue to do) for the contemporization of the shamisen."
