) has invited me to compose a new work for their spring concert at the Orpheum Annex on April 2nd 2016. The proposal is however possibly one of the most unique I've ever received!
Apparently Erato members Jeff Pelletier (flute) and Julie Begg (clarinet) have an
infamous ping pong rivalry
. The idea is this: a "competitive double concerto" of Jeff Pelletier v.s. Julie Begg, flute v.s. clarinet, with an accompanying ensemble of to-be-determined instrumentation (will include at least Will, tenor). I'm very excited that it will include collaborating with
), who will be writing text for this project, and who coincidentally I only just recently met last month during my participation in Art Song Lab 2015 (of which Ray is a cofounder).
Score and parts are tentatively due at the beginning of February; first, however, we will all be invited to witness a live table tennis match between Jeff & Julie to see this infamous rivalry first hand...
