3rd Annual Bathurst Chamber Music Festival

Posted by Lucas Oickle on Tuesday, January 20, 2015
I'm so pleased to have been invited to write again for the Bathurst Chamber Music Festival, directed by clarinetist David Scott. Last year five of the resident festival musicians premiered my Chaconne & Reel: The Fireship of Chaleur, for wind quartet & piano.

What is exciting and inspiring about this young annual festival is to watch how it is continuing to grow, despite having already given so much back to the community. This year, in continuing its mandate to support new Canadian music, the festival has offered the composers-in-residence a much larger pool of musicians to choose from, allowing us to write a piece of 10-15 minutes for a 10+ member chamber orchestra.

My prospective piece, now in the sketching stages, will be based around the Bathurst aster, a unique flower that exists only in New Brunswick but which is currently facing varying levels of disappearance due to loss of habitat. My tentative instrumentation will be for 12 players:

1111 / 1100 / str. quintet / hrp
( flute / oboe / clarinet / bassoon / horn / trumpet violin 1 / violin 2 / viola / 'cello / bass / harp )

Essentially, a wind quintet combined with a string quintet, as well as trumpet and harp.

This year, Bathurst Chamber Fest runs from May 11th - 17th in multiple locations around Bathurst, New Brunswick.
